If you are a fan of the classic movie musical, The Sound of Music, then Salzburg, Austria is a must-visit destination for you. The city is home to many of the famous filming locations from the movie, and there are several different tours available that will take you to these iconic spots. I recently went on the Sound of Music bike tour and had an amazing time reliving some of my favorite moments from the movie.

The tour began with a visit to Mirabel Gardens, a beautiful garden filled with flowers and stunning scenery. We had some free time to explore the area and take pictures before hearing an orchestra playing Sound of Music songs to the crowd of people. After a quick pitstop for gelato, we started our bike tour and headed to some of the famous filming locations.

One of the first stops was at Mirabel Gardens again, where Fraulein Maria sang “Do-Re-Mi” with the kids. It was amazing to stand in the same spot where the iconic scene was filmed and imagine Julie Andrews and the child actors performing there.

Next, we headed to Residenzplatz, a large square in the historic center of Salzburg. In the movie, Fraulein Maria sings “I Have Confidence” in this square, and our tour guide told us how difficult it was to film the scene due to the large crowds of people around.

We then visited both house locations from the movie, one being the front of the house where Fraulein Maria ran up and sang to the door. Our tour guide informed us that this house is now a dormitory for college students. We also visited the back of the house where the kids and Julie Andrews fall into the river upon arriving at the house.
One of my favorite stops on the tour was the Gazebo, where the eldest daughter, Liesel, and Ralph sang and danced to “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.” We took lots of pictures in this spot, and it was incredible to be standing where such an iconic scene was filmed.
Throughout the tour, our guide shared interesting facts and behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the movie. For example, the actor who played Captain Von Trapp couldn’t stand Julie Andrews, and that same actor had a fling with the actress who played the eldest daughter, Liesel.
Overall, the Sound of Music bike tour was a fantastic experience and a must-do for any fan of the movie. It was amazing to see these famous filming locations in person and to learn more about the making of this beloved musical. Salzburg is truly a magical city that will transport you back to the world of The Sound of Music
